The focus of the Aging and Circadian Rhythm Sleep Disorders Group is to understand how the two major sleep regulatory systems interact under normal conditions to promote consolidated sleep and alert wakefulness, to understand how the interactions of these systems differ between individuals and between groups and how they change with age, and to understand the consequences on sleep and waking performance when these systems are mistimed. This knowledge may lead to identification of individuals who are more or less susceptible to adverse sleep/circadian misalignment, to development of schedules and countermeasures for workers in professions where night work, shift work, and extended duty hours are necessary, and to understanding of normal and pathological changes that occur in aging.
