2023 Sleep and Health Benefit

On October 16, 2023, the Division of Sleep Medicine held its 22nd Annual Sleep and Health Benefit virtually. Daniel Buysse, M.D., UPMC Endowed Chair in Sleep Medicine and Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry, Clinical and Translational Science at University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, will be awarded the 2023 Harvard Medical School Division of Sleep Medicine Prize for his contributions to the field of Sleep Medicine. Charles A. Czeisler, MD, PhD, Baldino Professor of Sleep Medicine, Director of the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Chief of the Division of Sleep and Circadian Disorders in the Department of Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, presented the opening remarks. John Winkelman, M.D., Ph.D., Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and Chief, Sleep Disorders Clinical Research Program at Massachusetts General Hospital, presented the award.

2022 Sleep and Health Benefit

On October 3, 2022, the Division of Sleep Medicine held its 21st Annual Sleep and Health Benefit virtually. Dr. Pierre-Hervé Luppi, President of the European Sleep Research Society, Research Director for CNRS, and Head of Team “Sleep” at the Université Lyon I, France, was awarded the 2022 Harvard Medical School Division of Sleep Medicine Prize for his contributions to the field of Sleep Medicine. Charles A. Czeisler, MD, PhD, Baldino Professor of Sleep Medicine, Director of the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Chief of the Division of Sleep and Circadian Disorders in the Department of Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, presented the opening remarks. Clifford Saper, MD, PhD, James Jackson Putnam Professor of Neurology and Neuroscience at Harvard Medical School and Chair and Head of the Department of Neurology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center,  presented the award.

2021 Sleep and Health Benefit

Russell Grant Foster, CBE, BSc, PhD, DSc, FSB, FMedSci, FRS, Professor of Circadian Neuroscience, Fellow, Brasenose College University of Oxford, was awarded the 2015 Peter C. Farrell Prize in Sleep Medicine for his contributions to the field of Sleep Medicine.

Emmanuel Mignot, M.D., Ph.D., Craig Reynolds Professor of Sleep Medicine, Director, Stanford Center for Sleep Sciences and Medicine, Stanford University was awarded the 2013 Peter C. Farrell Prize in Sleep Medicine for his contributions to the field of Sleep Medicine.
2012 Sleep and Health Benefit Dinner
On September 27, 2012, the Division of Sleep Medicine held its 11th Annual Sleep and Health Benefit Dinner in the Harvard Club of Boston on Commonwealth Avenue. The dinner was preceded by the 2012 Division of Sleep Medicine Annual Poster Session. Allan I. Pack, M.B.Ch.B., Ph.D., John Miclot Professor, Perlman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania was awarded the 2012 Peter C. Farrell Prize in Sleep Medicine at the start of dinner.  Keynoters for the evening were: 1) Leslie A. Perlow, PhD, Konsosuke Matsushita Professor of Leadership, Harvard Business School and author of “Sleeping With Your SmartPhone: How to Break the 24/7 Habit and Change the Way You Work” and 2) the Honorable Mark R. Rosekind, Ph.D., Board Member, National Transportation Safety Board
2011 Sleep and Health Benefit Dinner
On September 27, 2011, the Division of Sleep Medicine held its 10th Annual Sleep and Health Benefit Dinner in the Harvard Club of Boston on Commonwealth Avenue. The dinner was preceded by the 2011 Division of Sleep Medicine Annual Poster Session and a discussion by Dr. Christian Guilleminault, MD, BioD, Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at the Stanford School of Medicine, about his life's work. In recognition of his outstanding work, Dr. Guilleminault was awarded the 2011 Peter C. Farrell Prize in Sleep Medicine immediately following the poster session.
2010 Sleep and Health Benefit Dinner
On Wednesday, October 6, 2010, the Division held its ninth annual Sleep and Health Benefit Dinner in the Popular Reading Room of the Boston Public Library. The evening was a great success, and a full house enjoyed inspiring welcoming remarks from Dr. Bill Chin, HMS Executive Dean for Research, and a compelling Keynote Address on "Sleep Disorders, Obesity and Diabetes: Three Intersecting Epidemics" from Dr. Eve Van Cauter, Frederick H. Rawson Professor of Medicine at the University of Chicago.

Concluding the event, Dr. Van Cauter was awarded the 2010 Peter C. Farrell Prize in Sleep Medicine, in honor of her outstanding contributions to the field of sleep.
2009 Sleep and Health Benefit Dinner
October 8, 2009 saw a full house in the magnificent the Museum of Fine Arts’ Koch Gallery, and a slate of luminary guest speakers describing the launch of a bold and exciting new Program in Sleep and Cardiovascular Medicine at Harvard Medical School.

Keynote speaker Dr. Susan Redline presented a convincing argument for the importance of  treatment of sleep disordered breathing for a range of cardiovascular health issues. Her presence with us for the evening marked the beginning of the realization of many years’ effort to create a world-class research program in this area of sleep at Harvard.
2008 Sleep and Health Benefit Dinner
On October 2, 2008, we were pleased to welcome Lee Marshall Nadler, MD, Harvard Medical School Dean for Clinical and Translational Research, who gave welcoming remarks and spoke to us about the role of sleep research in the new Harvard Clinical Translational Science Center.

Our Keynote Speaker for the evening, Robert W. McCarley, MD, Harvard Medical School Professor of Psychiatry, revealed "Why we get sleepy after being awake: On the trail of the brain elixir of sleep."
2007 Sleep and Health Benefit Dinner
On October 16, 2007, Editor-in-Chief Stuart F. Quan, MD provided guests with a sneak preview of the first module of the Division of Sleep Medicine's Sleep and Health Education Program.

Other highlights of the evening included an inspirational welcome speech by Jeffrey S. Flier, MD, Dean of Harvard Medical School, and the participation of two astronauts joining us from NASA. Captain Michael E. Lopez-Alegria and Commander Sunita L. Williams shared stories of sleep research, daily life and the difficulty of getting a good night's rest on space missions with guests, stimulating questions from scientists and non-scientists alike.
2006 Sleep and Health Benefit Dinner
The Division of Sleep Medicine held its fifth annual Sleep and Health Benefit Dinner on October 5, 2006, at which Massachusetts Senator Richard T. Moore made the keynote address: "Drowsy Driving - There Ought to be a Law!", describing his efforts to introduce drowsy driving legislation in Massachusetts.
2005 Sleep and Health Benefit Dinner
On September 29, 2005, at the fourth annual Sleep and Health Benefit Dinner, the Division of Sleep Medicine announced the news of its Sleep and Health Education Program, to be developed in partnership with WGBH Educational Foundation.

Harvard Medical School Dean of Resource Development, Mr. Jeffrey Newton gave the welcome address, and Clifford B. Saper, MD, PhD presented a compelling argument for the importance of sleep.
2004 Sleep and Health Benefit Dinner
September 20, 2004 was the date both of the 2004 Sleep and Health Benefit Dinner, and of the Installation Ceremony for the newly established Baldino and McGinnis Professorships in Sleep Medicine. Along with the Farrell Professorship in Sleep Medicine, these were the first of their kind, and established sleep firmly in the mainstream of academic medicine.

Dr. Joseph B. Martin, Dean of Harvard Medical School once again gave the welcome address for the third annual Sleep and Health Benefit Dinner, and Robert Stickgold, PhD presented the vital role of sleep and dreams in learning and memory.
2003 Sleep and Health Benefit Dinner
The 2003 Sleep and Health Benefit Dinner directed attention to the widespread problem of sleep-disordered breathing (sleep apnea), and the health consequences of this debilitating condition.

Dr. Joseph B. Martin, Harvard Medical School Dean, made the welcome address, and David P. White, MD gave an engaging presentation on the problem of sleep disordered breathing.
2002 Sleep and Health Benefit Dinner
The first Sleep and Health Benefit Dinner was held on October 10, 2002, and focused attention on the health and safety issues surrounding the work hours of medical interns and residents.

Funds raised through this event enabled the Division to extend the scope of the then-ongoing study of the effect of the extended work schedules of medical interns and residents on their health and safety, and that of their patients.
