Prospective applicants to the Research Training Program in Sleep, Circadian and Respiratory Neurobiology should note the following eligibility guidelines:
- Participation in this Research Training Program with funding from another source is permitted. Trainees with their own funding or with support from their laboratory who wish to participate in this program should consult the Certificate Program guidelines.
- Funding for this program is provided by Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Institutional Research Training Grants (T32) from the National Institutes of Heart, Lung, and Blood (NHLBI) of the National Institutes of Health. Eligibility is therefore restricted to U.S. citizens and permanent residents. A complete listing of requirements is available at the NHLBI Training and Career development page. For non-citizens, a notarized statement verifying possession of permanent residency documentation must be submitted. Individuals on temporary or student visas are not eligible for Kirschstein-NRSA support. Additionally, candidates for the Summer Underrepresented Medical Student Program must one or more of the criteria detailed in the Notice of NIH's Interest in Diversity, as required by the program funder.
- Pre-doctoral candidates will be required to have been accepted and matriculated into a Harvard or other doctoral degree program before they could begin training.
- Post-doctoral candidates will be required to have documented completion of all requirements of their post-doctoral degree before they could begin training. Individuals must have received a PhD, DVM, DDS, MD, or comparable doctoral degree from an accredited domestic or foreign institution.
- Post-doctoral candidates in particular should note restrictions of NRSA post-doctoral funding (whether Institutional or Individual) to no more than three years in total. Prior years of Pre-doctoral funding (maximum of five years) will not be counted toward this total.
- Appointments are awarded for up to two years for Post-docs and up to three years for Pre-docs. However, trainees wishing to renew their support must submit a renewal application each year. Trainees are recommended to acquaint themselves with the Pre-doctoral and Post-doctoral Training Program Requirements at the beginning of their initial appointment period, or earlier.
- Trainees wishing to renew their support should note that program requirements include submission of individual NRSA or equivalent funding application providing NRSA (or higher) level of salary support within 6 months (for Post-docs) or 18 months (for Pre-docs) of the trainee's initial start date. Trainees who fail to fulfill this and other requirements will be considered ineligible for renewal.
For further information on eligibility, applicants may wish to review the NIH NRSA policy statement, searching in particular under "Institutional Research Training Grants".
