Awarded in celebration of the work of Michel Jouvet, intrepid explorer of sleep and dreams.

  • Discoverer of the state of Paradoxical Sleep (REM sleep) in animals, so named by him since it paradoxically joins profoundly deep sleep and muscle atonia with cortical electrical brain activation similar to that of the waking state.
  • Trailblazer of the neurophysiology and neurochemistry of Paradoxical Sleep.
  • Pioneer of the study of oneiric physiology and behavior, pointing to the essential unity of dream sleep in all higher animals.
